Happy Pride! To celebrate, I am making buttermilk biscuits from Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg.

For this recipe, you’ll need butter, flour, baking powder, buttermilk and salt.

Fried Green Tomatoes is one of my all-time favourite books. Not only does it take place in the South, where half of my family comes from, it also features a lot of cooking — and a lesbian love story.

The book takes place over a whole century. The core story is set in a small Southern town in the 30s. The heart of the town is at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It’s where towns folk get coffee, eggs and grits, made by Sipsey, the cook. They exchange news with Ruth and Idgie, the owners.

Once you have the ingredients together, mix the dry ingredients in a bowl. Add the butter and combine.

Ruth and Idgie are in a relationship. They are childhood sweethearts, and through a lot of drama finally end up running the cafe together and living a pretty happy life. Of course, a lot of stuff happens. The town goes through the great depression. Loved ones are lost.

Still, this is my dream life. Serving American breakfast in a small-town café with a woman I love? Where do I sign up!

In this way, books can be doors to all kinds of lives. They show us a different way. They show us a life we might want, that we wouldn’t have known before. They show us how normal it can be to love a woman. Or to run a café with her. Or to eat a lot of grits.

Now, add the buttermilk. Roll out the dough and form biscuits. Bake them at 220 degrees until golden brown. Serve with gravy and some juicy town gossip.
